WHOIS Lookup

Enter a domain name or an IP address to see its full WHOIS record from the registry and registrar.

How it works

The tool sends your query to IANA's WHOIS server, which names the registry in charge of that domain or address block. It then asks that registry, and follows one more referral (for example to the domain's registrar, or to the organisation that manages an IP block) when the record says to. Each server's answer is shown exactly as it was sent.

FAQ

What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a long-running public directory of who holds a domain name or a block of IP addresses. Registries and registrars run WHOIS servers that answer queries on TCP port 43 with a plain-text record.
Why does the lookup ask several servers?
No single server knows everything. The tool starts at IANA, which says which registry is responsible (for example ARIN for 8.8.8.8, or Verisign for .com). For many domains that registry then points to the registrar's own server, which holds the full record. Each answer is shown in order.
Why are the owner's name and email hidden for many domains?
Since GDPR (2018) most registrars hide personal contact details and show "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" or a privacy service instead. IP address records for organisations are usually still public.
What's the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
RDAP is the modern replacement for WHOIS: the same registration data, but as structured JSON over HTTPS. The IP Lookup tool on RouteLearn.net uses RDAP; this tool shows the classic WHOIS text, which many people still find easier to read.
