Bandwidth Calculator
Convert a network speed between bits-per-second and bytes-per-second units: bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps, B/s, KB/s, MB/s, and GB/s.
How it works
This tool first converts every unit to bits per second. Then it converts that back out to every other unit. So converting 100 Mbps to MB/s really means: 100,000,000 bps ÷ 8 = 12,500,000 B/s = 12.5 MB/s.
FAQ
- Why are there both bits-per-second and bytes-per-second units?
- ISPs and hardware vendors almost always advertise connection speed in bits per second, like Mbps or Gbps. But file sizes and download managers show progress in bytes per second. Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, a "100 Mbps" connection tops out at about 12.5 MB/s, not 100 MB/s. That mix-up trips a lot of people up, and this tool is meant to clear it up.
- Are these decimal (1000-based) or binary (1024-based) units?
- These are decimal units. 1 Kbps is 1,000 bps, 1 Mbps is 1,000,000 bps, and so on. This matches how ISPs and hardware vendors advertise bandwidth.
